Achuthanandan resigns as Kerala Chief Minister


Thiruvananthapuram, May 14 : V.S. Achuthanandan on Saturday resigned as Kerala Chief Minister, a day after the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by him lost the Assembly polls by a slender margin.





Achuthanandan met Kerala Governor R.S. Gavai at Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram, and submitted the resignation.


Later interacting with the media, the 87-year-old thanked Gavai for his cooperation during his stint.


"As I lost majority in the assembly, my government is resigning. I am thanking the Governor for the cooperation he extended till date. He accepted the resignation," Achutanandan said.


Achutanandan also said that his party would be a strong opposition, which works for the welfare of people of Kerala.


"I am here stating that we would continue as a strong and functional opposition in the state. I hope the ruling party would not enforce people who are convicted in criminal and women trafficking cases on to the people of Kerala," he added.


The veteran leader has held various posts in the party and has served as the leader of Opposition from 1992 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2006.


In Kerala, the United Democratic Front (UDF) won by 72 seats, while the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) bagged 68 seats.
